Frances moved to New Zealand at the end of 1994 and, after more than six years as manager of a group of retail pharmacies, set up her own consulting business in 2001. Since then she has worked on a variety of projects across different sectors, most recently as project manager of the training and education partner programme of the Food Hawke’s Bay Major Regional Initiative. You will shortly receive an invitation to the next Cluster Event being planned for late July. Don't forget to have a regular look at the calendar of events - there's a lot on!
4. Calling all Java Application Developers
PWB is hosting an event on 28 June 2006 in association with the Wellington Java User Group and the NZ JAIN SLEE Forum to outline what needs to happen to further develop a JAIN SLEE industry in Wellington. The Forum is looking to compile a capability database of Java Application Developers.
JAIN SLEE is a JAVA driven technology that will help realise telecommunication technology convergence. Not perhaps the most memorable of new technology acronyms, but the revenue potential from JAIN SLEE within the global mobile telecommunications sector is estimated to be worth billions. Industry analysts Moriana Group and Yankee Group predict that the Telco market for JAIN SLEE will be around US $20B by 2009, and in its wider application into other verticals up to US $40B. Examples where the opportunities will be are in mobile commerce, mobile games, security, re-bundling and combined services.
In this potentail market, Wellington has a lead as a result of the pioneering work of Open Cloud Limited and considerable invetment in R&D and infrastructure. Open Cloud was the global specification lead in the JAVA community process. It is the global market leader with its Rhino product line and has significant access and relationships with many of the major Telco industry players and most of their suppliers.
The JAIN SLEE Industry Forum in an industry-led and managed forum that is bringing the NZ key players together with the aim of maximising NZ's share of this emerging market. The Forum is speaking with all the main Telcos in NZ, as well as all the relevant and interested universities and R&D activity, and developing a database of JAVA Application Developers that would provide the backbone of the JAIN SLEE capability.
5. NEW ICT Qualification
Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development (Electronics and ICT)
To achieve career progression and operate successfully in the workplace, it's important to keep up to date in your area of technical expertise and learn relevant business skills. Massey University and the University of Canterbury are collaborating to offer a Postgraduate Certificate designed to meet those needs. It may be studied over a two-year period, while you continue to work.
The Postgraduate Certificate will also contribute to the professional development requirements of:
• Engineers seeking to apply for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or who have attained CPEng;
• Members of the New Zealand Computer Society.
The Certificate has been designed to meet the needs of graduates and those with equivalent work experience in the ICT sector. The high level outcomes of the qualification are to:
1. Incorporate professional practice rather than focus only on knowledge and skill transfer.
2. Encourage critiquing of current professional practice through reflection on workplace practice.
3. Enable recent entrants to the workplace to better realise their potential and to further develop their creative abilities.
4. Develop graduates who have the ability to synthesise their knowledge and skills in the workplace to exercise a higher level of professional judgement.
5. Encourage ethical decision making and practice.
6. Focus on graduates applying skills learnt in the workplace through an appropriate change in their work organisation.
6. Enterprise Development Grant
In the May budget, the Minister for Economic Develpment announced that the market development component of the Enterprise Development Grant scheme will reopen on 1 July 2006 with a substantial increase in funding. There are also some changes in elegibility criteria:
