MediaLab Founding Chief Executive to depart

MediaLab Press Release: Friday, 3rd March 2006

Michael Gregg, chief executive of MediaLab Limited, is leaving the local ICT research company after almost five years in the role. Having overseen the transition from incorporated society into a venture capital-backed private company, Michael has decided to step down to seek a new challenge.

“Personally, I think it’s time for new leadership. I’d like to put my start-up skills to use in other areas and this decision gives the company an opportunity to deepen our senior technical and commercialisation expertise,” says Michael.

“MediaLab is now in its strongest position ever, with solid support from its key customers, its shareholders and its University partners.”

“MediaLab is on track to double its research turnover in 2006, with strong investment into telecommunications research from the private sector and government, particularly from the Foundation for Research Science & Technology.”

Executive Chairman Richard Bentley adds that the current major projects leverage national University capabilities in ICT to support research and development into Telecom’s next-generation-network roll out, and add enhancements to the 027 mobile network. Through 2006, MediaLab intends to increasingly focus on other industry sectors, initially in energy.

“With investment from shareholders, TMT Ventures and Otago Innovation Ltd, MediaLab is also planning a greater focus on commercialising research outputs this year.“

“And as a result of Michael’s resignation we will be reviewing our senior management requirements in the context of an increasing need for in-house ICT capability,” says Richard.
